There are experiences that seem to embody, all on their own, the very essence of a destination. In Deauville, riding a horse on the beach—between the famous Planches and the vast expanse of the sea—is undoubtedly one of them.
During a stroll, the sound of the waves accompanies the horses’ footsteps, colorful beach umbrellas flash by in the distance, and the Côte Fleurie reveals itself from an entirely new perspective.
Deauville, Land of Horses
In Deauville, the history of horses is everywhere.
It takes place at racetracks, at nearby stud farms, at yearling sales, and even on the beach, where horses can often be seen training at low tide.
Early in the morning, just as the town is beginning to wake up, their silhouettes can sometimes be seen through the mist. At the end of the day, they walk through the golden light, leaving behind a trail of footprints in the wet sand.
Taking a horseback ride on the beach allows you to immerse yourself, if only for a few moments, in this tradition that is deeply rooted in Deauville’s identity.
The Encounter with Her Horse
The ride begins at the equestrian center, where the staff welcomes the riders and explains the itinerary for the outing.
You don’t have to be an experienced rider to participate. Horses are selected based on each rider’s skill level, experience, and comfort level. Beginners can explore the beach at a walk, while more experienced riders may occasionally ride at a brisker pace when conditions allow.
After getting to know your horse, you adjust your riding helmet, listen to the final instructions, and gently mount the horse.
The first few minutes are spent finding your balance and getting used to the horse's movement. Then the group gradually leaves the center and heads toward the seaside.
The excitement then gives way to an almost immediate sense of calm.
Head to the beach
As we get closer to the shore, the air grows cooler and the sound of the waves can be heard.
Then the beach comes into view.
Before us, the sand stretches as far as the eye can see. Deauville’s famous beach umbrellas dot the landscape, while the Pompeian-style beach huts line the Planches.
From the saddle, everything seems different. The view opens up, the sounds of the city fade away, and your gaze naturally turns toward the horizon.
The horse walks calmly along the sand, lulled by the steady rhythm of the waves. All you have to do is relax your shoulders, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment.
Stroll along the famous Planches
The walk continues along the Planches, one of Deauville’s most iconic landmarks.
The cabs bearing the names of the actors and directors of the American Film Festival pass by in the distance. The Anglo-Norman villas, historic hotels, and colorful parasols create a setting that is both elegant and timeless.
Walkers sometimes stop to watch the horses pass by. A few children wave, while the riders’ silhouettes are reflected in the damp sand.
At low tide, the beach stretches out endlessly. The sky is reflected on the shore, creating the impression of straddling two horizons.
It's an image we'd like to be able to hold onto a little longer.
A sense of freedom
When conditions and the riders' skill levels allow, the pace may pick up slightly.
The horse lengthens its stride, then breaks into a trot. The most experienced riders may sometimes experience the unique sensation of galloping on the sand, facing the sea.
For a few seconds, there is nothing but the wind, the horse’s movement, and the horizon ahead.
But you don't have to gallop to feel that sense of freedom. Even at a walk, a ride has a deeply soothing quality. The horse's steady rhythm invites you to slow down and fully reconnect with the landscape.
The phone stays put away, conversations become less frequent, and we simply savor the pleasure of being there.
In the morning or during the golden hour?
Every moment of the day offers a different experience.
In the morning, the beach is still quiet. The light is soft, the air is invigorating, and the resort seems to belong to the horses and a few early morning strollers. After the walk, you can round out the morning with a coffee on the Planches or a stroll through the market.
As the day draws to a close, the atmosphere becomes even more spectacular. The sun sinks toward the sea, the shadows grow longer, and the sand takes on golden hues. The beach gradually empties, and the light envelops the horses and their riders.
This is our favorite part.
We return from our walk with our cheeks rosy from the wind and the feeling that we’ve experienced a moment outside of time.
Extend Your Day in Deauville
After the walk, you can take some time to stroll along the Planches and look for the artists' names inscribed on the booths.
For a gourmet break, settle in on the terrace overlooking the beach with a coffee, hot chocolate, or glass of white wine. On cooler days, a Normandy pastry is the perfect treat after a walk.
You can also continue exploring Deauville by visiting Les Franciscaines, strolling through the streets lined with villas, or treating yourself to a few hours at the spa.
Then, before heading back to La Villa Marcelle, we turn to face the sea one last time.
The horses' tracks may still be visible in the sand.
Claire's Tips
Book your ride in advance, especially on weekends, during school breaks, and in the summer. Be honest about your riding ability so the team can select a suitable horse and route.
The rides depend on tide schedules and weather conditions. From May through September, horses are generally allowed on the beach only in the early morning and in the evening.
Wear comfortable pants and closed-toe shoes with a small heel. A riding helmet is required, and safety equipment is usually provided by the riding center.
Finally, bring a light jacket. Even when the weather is nice, it can get chilly on the beach.
