Sunset walk along the coast
There are some evenings we’d like to hold on to a little longer. On the Normandy coast, as the sun slowly sinks toward the sea, the landscape is bathed in golden light, and time finally seems to slow down.
The Golden Hour
In the late afternoon, when the heat starts to ease and the beaches begin to empty out, our favorite moment arrives: putting on a light sweater, tossing a few essentials into a basket, and heading out for a walk along the coast.
From Sainte-Adresse, the path follows the sea and its ever-changing hues. The deep blue of the horizon meets the green of the cliffs, while the houses facing the sea gradually take on pinkish hues.
We walk along without really keeping track of the time, lulled by the sound of the waves and the cries of the seagulls. Here, every turn offers a new view, like a postcard you’re seeing for the first time.
Facing the sea
The walk begins on the hills above Sainte-Adresse, where the light bathes the entire Bay of Le Havre. From the hanging gardens or the paths that run along Cap de la Hève, the view stretches far into the distance.
Below, a few sailboats cast slender silhouettes against the horizon. The beach huts are slowly closing, the last swimmers are coming ashore, and the terraces are coming alive for aperitifs.
We then head down toward the seaside promenade, passing by the old villas and their secluded gardens. Some doors are left slightly ajar, offering a glimpse of lush hydrangeas, wild roses, and dinners just beginning to be prepared.
Everything seems gentler at that time of day.
The Most Beautiful Show
As the walk goes on, the sky changes. The blue turns pastel, then blends with pink, orange, and sometimes an almost unreal shade of purple.
On evenings when clouds roll in, the view is even more beautiful. The light filters through them, casting long shadows on the sea and giving the landscape the feel of an Impressionist painting. It’s not hard to see why so many painters have come here in search of colors and inspiration.
We pick a spot to stop: a few pebbles still warm to the touch, a bench facing the sea, or a patch of grass up on the hillside. All that’s left to do is open the bottle we brought along for the occasion and share some of the market’s fresh produce.
Fresh bread, some cheese from Normandy, a few pieces of seasonal fruit… That’s all it takes.
An impromptu dinner on the pebbles
To make the evening last a little longer, we like to put together a picnic that’s as simple as it is generous. A pretty tablecloth, mismatched glasses, a few candles to shield from the wind, and anything else that’s easy to share.
When the sun finally touches the horizon, the conversations come to a halt almost naturally. For a few minutes, everyone watches the light fade behind the sea.
Then the sky remains clear for quite a while, as it often does on summer evenings in Normandy. The lights of Le Havre come on one by one, tracing a new line on the horizon.
The Way Home
Night is slowly falling as we head back home. The air has grown cooler and smells of salt, gardens, and damp earth all at once.
Back at La Villa Marcelle, we’re greeted by the warm glow of the lights, the silence of the park, and the pleasure of lingering into the evening with one last cup of herbal tea—or one last glass of wine.
A simple walk, but one of those you remember.
Because the most beautiful moments are sometimes the ones we didn’t really plan: a special kind of light, a few steps along the seashore, and that precious feeling of being exactly where we were meant to be.
Our Favorite Itinerary
Set out in the late afternoon from Sainte-Adresse, take a walk along the hills above Cap de la Hève, then head down to the seaside to watch the sunset from the beach.
A little tip from Claire: Be sure to pack a sweater—even in the middle of summer—along with a blanket and some local treats so you can enjoy an impromptu aperitif overlooking the sea.
A seaside getaway to savor at a leisurely pace, before returning to the tranquility of La Villa Marcelle.
